Travel Tips for Families with Food Allergies

Travel Tips for Families with Food Allergies

Traveling with kids can be difficult, and traveling with kids who have food allergies can seem almost impossible. We are here to tell you that you can have a relaxing vacation with your children so that they can have the time of their lives, without the extra added stress of what might happen if they eat something they are allergic to. Keep reading for our travel tips for families with food allergies so you can go enjoy that well-deserved getaway.

Plan Your Meals

Plan Your Meals

One tip for traveling with family members who have severe food allergies is to plan out your meals. This is going to take a lot of research and late nights getting meals ready, but it’s worth it! If you’re going on a road trip, try to bring as much food with you as you can. When possible, check to see if there is a local grocery store at your destination (or along the way) for any last-minute or perishable items.

You can also spend some time before your trip checking out the menus of local restaurants and calling them to ask about ingredients used, or requesting a nutrition guide. This way, you will already know exactly what safe foods your child can order and you can rest assured that you’ll have a great trip ahead. Make sure to mention that you’ll write them a great Yelp review for going out of their way to do this for you — and hey, you get a night off of cooking!

Prep As Much As You Can

Prep As Much As You Can

Preparation is the key to any successful family vacation, and this goes without saying that you should prep as much as possible when it comes to food allergies, as well. Along with planning meals and calling local restaurants, here are some other things you can prep before your big trip:

Call the hotel you’re staying at and request a microwave or fridge. If there is not one there, see if you can purchase one at a local Goodwill during your stay. If appropriate, stay in an Airbnb instead of a hotel so that you have a kitchen and can make homecooked meals. Pack a kit with medicine, doctor’s notes, hand wipes for surfaces, and an EpiPen. Keep it handy at the top of your bag in case you need it at a moment’s notice. Talk with your kids before the trip and remind them of their food allergies. Kids might be tempted to eat indulgently on vacation, so it is important to remind them of why they cannot to minimize any possible tantrums. Research local care in the area you are vacationing. Check to see where the hospitals or urgent care facilities are, directions, and how long it might take to get there in the scenario that you need them.
