Our Top 3 Spring Break & Family Travel Tips

Hard to believe, but spring break is fast approaching, and you’re likely planning some fun activities for your kid’s time off school or daycare. It’s finally time to enjoy warm weather again and dip our toes into some summer fun! As fun as it all sounds, travel can be exhausting and stressful—especially for Moms. Keeping your kiddos entertained during travel days is at the top of that list, and it can be pretty tempting to give them excessive screen time. While screens are a great tool to use at times like these, there are still plenty of ways you can travel easily and be less stressed with your kids. Keep reading to learn our top 3 spring break and family travel tips, including some awesome products to help keep everyone entertained and happy.

Tip 1: You Can Never Be Too Prepared

The most important thing to do when traveling with kids is to make sure you are well prepared. It can be easy to overpack, especially if you still have a baby or toddler, but usually, most things get used. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it desperately and picturing it on your shelf at home!

Some things to remember include:
  • A first aid kit, or at least some bandaids, medicine, hand sanitizer, and wound care supplies
  • A bin, suitcase, or box of your kid’s favorite toys—bonus points if they help you pack it
  • A few new toys that keep them interested, such as activity packs or Play-Doh
  • All sleep essentials, such as noise machines, blackout curtains, and nap pods

In addition to packing, it is important to be well-prepared with activities and things to do, especially if your kiddos are still young, to avoid an overload of screen time. This is especially important if you are heading on a staycation or staying in a hotel room.

  • Plan things to do for the morning. Staying in a hotel room with your whole family can, very quickly, become small. Find hotels that offer continental breakfasts in the morning, and research some nearby coffee shops, hiking trails, or parks to hang out at and get the wiggles out.
  • Research nearby attractions. Before you arrive at your destination, research local attractions such as museums, zoos, aquariums, arcades, outdoor malls, or amusement parks to kill some time during the day.
  • Set up an activity station. Whether you’re at an Airbnb or a hotel room, make sure your little one has their own little space they can make their own. Set up an area with all their toys, some coloring or activity supplies, and some pillows to make it fun and inviting for them to hang out in during those times you’re resting, getting ready, or need a break.

Tip 2: Schedule Some Downtime

While it is very important to be well-prepared when traveling with kids, it is just as important to schedule some downtime for the whole family. It can be tempting to want to jam-pack every day and make the most of your vacation, but don’t burn yourselves out!

Some easy downtime activities include:
  • Take advantage of the hotel pool for an afternoon
  • Don’t overplan beach days—simple sand toys usually do the trick!
  • Ditch all your dinner and lunch reservations—trying to make them will just stress you out! Keep a few to plan around, but don’t overschedule yourself

Tip 3: Remember that Kids Will Be Kids

No matter how excited your kids are about their upcoming trip, just remember: Kids will be kids! In other words, lower your expectations and understand that things will pop up and happen. They may not want to do everything on your list, they might not enjoy everything you thought they would enjoy, and they will almost certainly have a meltdown at some point or another.

Trips look different now than before you had kids. Things might take a little longer to get done, you may not get to stay out as late as you want, and you might not get to do everything you had on your list. Your kids may touch things they’re not supposed to, they might get sick, or they might act a little crazy on their sugar high.

Just remember: Your kids will feed off of your energy. If you are stressed out and not having a good time, that will become contagious for the rest of your family. Try your best to stay stress-free, roll with the punches, and have a great time despite things not going perfectly as you imagined.
