Ready To Switch Off Summer Mode?

It’s no secret that when kids are in summer mode, things are very different. They’re sleeping in late, hanging around the house more, and not engaging in nearly as much learning activity as they usually are duing the school year. While summer is a very welcome and needed break for kids, it’s also important to be able to help ease them from summer mode into the school mode. Ready to start making the transition now? Keep reading for our best tips on switching from summer to school, and the products that will get them super excited for the school year ahead.

Easing into Back-To-School

Restart Your Routine

Kids need plenty of time to adjust, especially when it comes to reinstating bedtimes and wake-up times. Start about a week or two before school starts so that their bodies will get used to it, and they will (hopefully!) not be so sluggish on the first week of school.

In addition, it is important to start feeding them lunches and snacks around the same time that school does. This way, they wont run out of fuel on the first few days of school and their bodies will be ready to go.

Make sure you take time to remind your child what their school year routine is like. Having conversations such as, “During the school year, it is important to wake up, brush your teeth, get dressed, and brush your hair in a timely manner. We’re going to start practicing now!”

Set Goals Together

A great way to get your child excited for the school year is to sit down together and set some goals.

Some examples might include:
  • Try out for the basketball team
  • Run for student council
  • Get a better grade than last year in a tough subject
  • By Christmas break, read 10 books
  • Participate more in class
  • Make new friends

You can write these goals down on a piece of paper or a white board to keep in their room or homework area. They will stay inspired to work toward their goals, and they will be excited to get started on them in a few weeks.

Say Goodbye to Summer

When kids think of summer, they think of flexibility, freedom, and fun. Vacations, beaches, pools, time with family and friends, relaxing at home, and more have filled up their days for months, and now they have to say goodbye to it all. This can be tough for many kiddos, especially ones who might not particularly enjoy school.

Saying goodbye to summer is a great way to acknowledge the great times we had, while also getting set for the school year.

Some ideas for saying goodbye to summer include:
One last vacation. Even if it is just a quick day trip or one-night staycation, have one more fun adventure for your kids to look forward to. Make sure you refer to it as your Goodbye Summer Trip, so that they know when they get home, it is ime to get in gear for school.
BBQ Cookout. Nothing says “summer” more than a grill, so host a cookout or BBQ with your family (and even some of your children’s school friends!) for one last celebration before school begins.
S’mores and stargazing. Have a “campout” in the yard one night to make s’mores and stargaze for their last night of staying up super late before school begins.
Something to look forward to once school begins. The end of summer doesn’t have to equal the end of fun. Set something in place for once school begins so that your kiddo still has one more thing to look forward to. It can be something simple, such as tickets to a baseball game.

Shop for Supplies Together

Is there anything more fun than going back-to-school shopping? Getting your outfits ready for the first few days of school and organizing all of your school supplies is an exciting time for every kid.

Instead of getting it all done for them yourself, make sure you include your kiddo in the back-to-school shopping fun. Whether it’s a day trip to Target or Walmart, or spending some time on the computer together getting some great online deals, your kids will love shopping for their supplies with you. Whether it is picking out new shoes for the year or choosing the type of pens and pencils they want, they are going to have a blast making it all uniquely theirs!
