Easter Ideas for Your Sensory Kid
If you have a sensory kid, you know that holidays can be a little bit overwhelming for them. All of the extra excitement, more people in your home, heading to new places, and taking part in large activities can be a lot for a child who has a sensory processing disorder. If you have a sensory kid, we have some great ideas to help make Easter fun. Keep reading to see our favorite Easter ideas for sensory kids, including a few sensory toys that will make their Easter basket special! What is a Sensory Kid?
Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a condition that affects how your brain processes sensory information (stimuli). Sensory information includes things you see, hear, smell, taste, or touch. SPD can affect all of your senses or just one. SPD usually means you’re overly sensitive to stimuli that others are not. But the disorder can cause the opposite effect, too. In these cases, it takes more stimuli to impact you. On the other hand, lack of sensory input can impact your social and emotional health. For example, hearing loss has been shown to increase the risk of developing dementia because it causes social isolation and depression. (source: Familydoctor.org )
Here are some common symptoms that your child may be a sensory-seeker:
- Unable to sit still
- Closely observes others
- Picks at fingers
- Takes risks, like jumping off of high places, or comes off as “brave” at the playground
- Needs to touch everything
Symptoms of sensory-avoiders include:
- Does not like affection, hugs, or kisses
- Easily startled
- Does not like bright lights or sounds
- Expresses that their clothes are uncomfortable
- Panics when people are too close
- Focuses on random background noises

Here are some great Easter activities you can set up to keep your sensory kid calm, entertained, and happy throughout the busy day!
Calming Sensory Bottle
Inspired by Laughing Kids Learn, all you need is a small plastic test tube bottle (or similar), sequins, Easter-themed erasers, glitter (optional), clear dish soap, and super glue. Fill up the bottle with everything except the super glue—use that to glue the lid on. Watch as your kiddo enjoys shaking up the sensory bottle and getting all its great calming effects.
Easter-Themed Rice Bin
Rice sensory bins are so much fun for sensory kids! All you need is a large bin, fill it with rice, and add in Easter-themed items such as carrots, bunnies, open Easter Eggs, and more! Set up an egg carton for the kids to place their finds and maybe toss in a few pieces of candy, too!
Easter Egg Water Play
Water play is a favorite among sensory seekers! Fill up a bin with water and let your little one go to town with Easter-themed items. Make sure they have lots of open Easter Eggs to pour water around with, and even add in some food coloring to make it extra fun.
